When YouTube sensation Logan Paul shot an episode of his online series there, portraying a suicide victim at the location, the forest, also known as Aokigahara, made headlines throughout the world last year.
Watanabe, who was born nearby and has spent the majority of his life in and around the forest, was outraged by the footage.
It’s a natural woodland. It is a religious forest. That kind of place is not here, he declared. He asked, “Do people want to make this forest a hell? It’s so distressing to see the woods depicted in such a depressing way.”
It is a dark environment, covered with moss and twisted roots, and densely populated with huge trees that shade out the sun.
The connection finally grew so deep that suicidal people started going to the forest to commit suicide. Although there are no longer any official statistics on suicides in the forest, there used to be dozens of deaths there each year.
